Steve began violin and viola lessons with Tim Robb in Bath. Two years later he gained a DfES scholarship on the specialist music scheme at Wells Cathedral School to study the viola with Patricia Noall. During his time there he gained experience in solo, chamber and orchestral playing and benefited from regular coaching and performance opportunities. He was awarded the Yfrah Neaman prize for outstanding string playing. At Wells he began several years of regular lessons in the Alexander Technique with Antonia Del Mar.

In 2007, Steve began a four-year undergraduate course studying the viola with Mark Knight at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Steve graduated with a first class Bachelor of Music honours degree in 2011. Steve was offered a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music for postgraduate study where he studied with Garfield Jackson. During that year, Steve participated in an Erasmus exchange to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki for four months, where he studied with Pirkko Simojoki. He gained a first class Master of Arts degree from the Royal Academy of Music and was awarded the prestigious DipRAM for an outstanding final recital.

Since then, he has pursued further study with Pirkko Simojoki in Finland, as well as Yuri Gandelsman in the USA.

Steve is grateful to the following organisations for supporting his studies:
